The Challenge

A few weeks ago I had the privilege of shooting a portrait for a good friend of mine, Lynne Farris Schafer. She herself is an award winning, exhibited and published photographer, and a great writer/editor. She was inspired by this shoot of Kate Winslet done for the WSJ by photographer Willy Vanderperre. Shortly before the shoot, she informed me that she has never liked any portraits or photographs that was ever taken of her. I took it as a challange and did my very best to capture the best images of her. In the end she liked 5 out of the 14 images I selected from the shoot. The 2 images here are the ones I printed for her.

Here is the setup.

The setup was really simple. I used a white seamless backdrop and crossed two strobes fitted with a Westcott 45" Round Halo. This could be done with a regular shoot through umbrella, but I prefer the Halo as I can feather the light and control the spill.

Tech Notes:

  • Both strobes set to equal power and measured at f/5.6, 1/125s and ISO 100 at subject position. Both strobes were roughly 4' away fromt he subject.

  • As I am shooting really high key, the camera was set to 1/125s, f/5.6, ISO 1000. That is +3 1/3 stop from the metered light.

  • Images shot as raw and edited in Adobe Lightroom™.
